With the best counter software that was available
back then, in the 20th century

[Compteur]

Wishing to add a little "20th century" touch to your website?

After days searching the Internet, I was able to get my hands back on a genuine, highly customisable counter program that was used in the 1990s, when webcounters were highly popular on personal websites. And that's possibly the best counter software that has ever been written. I'm using it daily on my personal website ( French) and I'm also providing my visitors with the source code for that program.

But if you are unable or unwilling to install the software on the server that hosts your site, I'm now opening a free webcounter service, allowing you to call the program remotely and securely, and for free! All that you need is to insert a single line of HTML to your pages to create and update the counters.

Why should you pay for something on any other website, when you can get here the best for free?

Your counters, easyly & quickly!

To start, just pick a unique random counter filename (ending with .dat) following UNIX naming rules (such as mywebsite-0002010.dat - it must be different from all other users' names) to identify your counter. Then simply call the counter (replace my-counter.dat with the name you picked) with:
<IMG SRC="https://freecounter.theraphit.com/scripts/Count.cgi?df=my-counter.dat">
And that's it! No further steps required!! Using this call will automatically create the counter and should then display something like this:

You may create as many counters as you want by changing the .dat filename in the URL. Any non-existent counter will be automatically created, and existing ones will be incremented. Just make sure the filename you choose is unique!

Want to start the counter with a higher value? Add st=value to the CGI query string. For instance:
<IMG SRC="https://freecounter.theraphit.com/scripts/Count.cgi?st=500000&df=my-counter.dat">
You don't need to change this line after counter initialization, as the st parameter is ignored when calling an existing counter.

A wide range of styles are available!

You may check any other option this software has to offer by referring to its official homepage - still online after 30 years!
There's also that example page with lots of different snippets you may use.

Alternatively, if you'd prefer to build and install this counter program on your own UNIX/Linux server, you may download it here: wwwcount2.2.tar.gz

Have fun with your vintage counters!
